What is AOSC?
Overview of the AOSC
The Australasian Occupational Science Centre (AOSC)
is a community education and research centre within
the Centre for Health
Service Development, at the University of Wollongong.
It is located at the University's Shoalhaven Campus,
in Nowra. AOSC is based on the premise of occupational
science that people need to participate in purposeful
occupation for their health and wellbeing.
Mission
AOSC will promote an occupational perspective
of health and well being through its local occupation-based
research and projects.
Three key beliefs underlie the AOSC's occupational
perspective:
- People need to participate in a balanced
range of purposeful occupations for their
health and well being.
- People have a right to participate in occupations
relevant to their community.
- Participation in occupation promotes healthy
individuals, communities and populations.
Goal
The goal of AOSC is to enable people of all
ages to participate in purposeful occupation
for their health and well being.
Approach
AOSC adopts a population approach to health
based on the principles of the Ottawa Charter
which include:
- developing personal skills
- creating supportive environments
- strengthening community action
- building healthy public policy
Objectives
The primary objectives of the AOSC are to:
- provide community education programs about
the relationship between health and purposeful
occupation
- develop occupation-based community projects
- conduct occupation-based research
- make recommendations for public health policy
Outcomes
As the AOSC education and research expands, AOSC
will contribute to the social and economic development
of the Shoalhaven by:
- attracting research funding
- fostering knowledge-based industries
- enhancing intellectual capital assets and
productivity
- attracting students, scholars and international
researchers
- stimulating community engagement with the
University of Wollongong
- raising the identity and reputation of the
Shoalhaven throughout the world
