'Do It Now' Project
| The 'Do it now' Project was the
first project to be conducted by the Australasian
Occupational Science Centre (AOSC). It was conducted
between July 2005 and June 2006.
The Project consisted of a community education
program and a research
program.

Education program
The community education program was available
at no cost to Shoalhaven residents aged 55+.
The aim of the program was to inform Shoalhaven
residents about the need to participate in meaningful
activities for health and wellbeing. The program
is specifically designed for those planning
to retire from work or who have recently retired.
The program consisted of 2 x 3 hours sessions
held once a week.
Day and evening programs were throughout the
Shoalhaven.
Research program
Information about the personal and community
- based barriers to older people's participation
in meaningful activities was gathered during
the program.
This information is being analysed to form
the basis of a report on participation by older
Shoalhaven residents. The report will include
recommendations for enabling older people to
participate in a range of activities. The report
will also identify the community - based barriers
to older people's participation and suggest
ways of overcoming them.
The report will be relevant to the Shoalhaven
City Council, the Illawarra Retirement Trust,
the Shoalhaven Division of General Practice
and the South Eastern and Illawarra Area Health
Service. The recommendations in the report will
be significant for developing a cohesive community
policy for older Shoalhaven residents.
The 'Do it now' Project was jointly funded
by the Department of Transport and Regional
Services (DOTARS) through its Regional Partnership
scheme, the Shoalhaven City Council and AOSC
Pty Ltd.
